3727 Holmes

Designed by Selby Kurfiss in 1909 for J. Sydney Smith, this home with its steeply pitched green tile roof is a stunning example of French Norman architecture. The house was designed for entertaining. Extensive mahogany woodwork, columns and wide-open rooms on the first floor, a billiards room on the third floor, as well as bedrooms with attached baths and walk-in closets were very progressive for 1909. This home is also said to have the only center hall circular staircase in Hyde Park. Sadly, due to a personal tragedy, J. Sydney Smith never lived in the house and it was sold in 1910 to the Oppenstein brothers, who owned the house for the next 44 years.
